Obituary for Steven Paul Strom

Steven Strom, age 76, of Madison, South Dakota died Saturday, April 20, 2019 at Ava’s House in Sioux Falls, South Dakota surrounded by family.

Funeral service will be 11 AM on Saturday, April 27th at Trinity Lutheran Church, Madison, South Dakota with Pastor Constanze Hagmaier officiating.  Visitation will be Friday, from 5 to 7 PM with a prayer service at 7 PM at the Weiland Funeral Chapel in Madison and will continue one hour before the service in the church Saturday.  Interment will be in St. Peter Cemetery, Orland Township. The Weiland Funeral Chapel of Madison is in charge of the arrangements.

Steven Paul Strom was born May 25, 1942 in Madison, South Dakota to Helmer C. and Dorothy (Mallwitz) Strom in Madison, South Dakota. Steven grew up in the Orland Township, thirteen miles south of Madison, and attended kindergarten through high school at Orland School.  The country school was not too far from their family farm.  He graduated from Orland High School in 1960. He was involved in various sports/activities in high school, and his servitude followed him into adulthood. He was known to unselfishly help others in time of need. He sat on several boards for St. Peter Lutheran Church in Orland Township.

On February 22, 1964 he was united in marriage to Joyce Erickson of Montrose, South Dakota.  Of this union, they were blessed with three children:  Steve, Julie, and Shelly.  In 1971, Steven took over his great grandfather’s farm (Christian Strom).  This became the homestead Steven would farm and raise his family.  Steven and Joyce worked tireless hours on the farm, while both had additional jobs in Madison.   When Steven was younger, he farmed and drove school bus for the Madison School District.   Steven raised various livestock and crops.  Steven’s pride and joy were his cattle.  He devoted hours studying the breed and bloodlines.  He spent many sleepless nights ensuring every new calf had a fighting chance at life, sometimes bringing them into the family home for shelter.   Aside from his passion, commitment, and hours he spent toiling the ground and raising livestock, he always had a faithful sidekick next to him.  Steven loved his dogs.  He always had a dog riding along side him in his truck.

Steven was an avid Vikings and Twins fan.  But nothing was more important to him than his eight grandchildren’s events.  He was their #1 fan and biggest cheerleader in the stands.  In 1981, the homestead was named a Centennial farm and continues to be farmed today by the 6th generation grandson, Andrew Strom. In 2010, Steven retired from farming and moved into Madison.

In 2011, Steven suffered from a severe stroke which left him paralyzed.  However, he was still sharp as a tack and enjoyed time with family and friends.  Joyce cared for him the next eight years in their home.  The family believes Joyce’s caretaking skills, and Steven’s love for his family and friends were the driving force (for him) to exceed the doctor’s recommended life expectancy.

Steven is survived by his wife, Joyce and three children; Steve (Barb) Strom, Julie (Tracy) Large, and Shelly (Todd) Balogh; eight grandchildren – Andrew (Jill) Strom, Jessica (Jordan) Dockter, Braxton Large, Brennan Large, Tucker Large, Ty Large, Brady (Danielle) Balogh, and Allison Balogh; 3 1/2 great grandchildren – Sawyer Strom, Trey Strom, Barrett Balogh, and soon-to-be- baby boy Dockter; brother – Curtis (Barb) Strom; sisters – Nancy (Dennis) Rook and Nyla Sorheim; special family friend – Kaddie Dixon; and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.  Steven is preceded in death by his parents; Helmer and Dorothy Strom; in-laws – Orville and Leila Erickson, wife's aunt - Clarinda "Katy" Henle and several cousins.

The family would like to thank the Sanford ER and Pulmonary Unit as well as the Ava House staff; especially Kaddie, Cassie, and Sasha.
