Obituary for Shirley Larson

Shirley Larson, age 85, formerly of Ramona and Madison, passed away July 9, 2019. 

Funeral service will be 10:30 AM on Saturday, July 13th at Weiland Funeral Chapel with Father Bob Vinslauski officiating.  Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.  Burial will be in St. Thomas Cemetery.  Active casketbearers will be Curtis Mavity, Ben Larson, Daniel Larson, Adam Hite and Alex Gast. 

Shirley Alice Garrey was born in De Smet, SD on May 25, 1934 to Thomas & Nadine (Noah) Garrey. She graduated from De Smet High School.Shirley married Stanley E. Larson on September 28, 1952. They were married for 54 years prior to Stanley’s death in 2006. They had 4 children.

Shirley and Stan operated the Ramona Bar for 35 years. Shirley’s life was filled with work. She worked as a cook for the Ramona School, part-time at the Post Office in Ramona, and for a short time at the nursing home in Ramona. Shirley also gave time to her community as a member of the St. William’s Catholic Church Altar Society and the American Legion Auxiliary. She enjoyed working with her flowers, having tea with the neighbors, and the frequent visits by her grandchildren. A devoted wife and mother, she enjoyed being surrounded by her loving family. Her home was always shared with a family dog.  

Survivors include daughters, Debbie (Dave) Mavity of Sioux Falls and Rhonda (David) Hite of Belton, TX; son, Mark (Mary) Larson of Rochester, MN; daughter-in-law, Shannon George-Larson of Lake City, SD; eight grandchildren,  Wendy (Scott) Cornelisen of Atlanta, GA, Curtis (Laura) Mavity of Sioux Falls, SD, Meghan (David) Ibarra of Lomita, CA, Katie Larson of Pierre, SD, Ben Larson of Rochester, MN, Amanda (Alex) Gast of Blaine, MN, Dan (Alyse) Larson of St. Louis Park, MN and Adam (Natasha) Hite of Travis AFB, CA; six great-grandchildren, Jada, Korbin & Ivy Mavity; Riley & Keegan Hite and Xavier Gregorio Ibarra. 

Shirley was preceded in death by her parents; her husband and her cherished son, Gregory.
