Myrtle Amelia Byrne was born in Lake County on January 21st, 1926 to George and Myrtle (Thompson) Lingbeck.  After attending school in Winfred, SD, she married William Sylvester Byrne on September 9, 1944 in Pipestone, Minnesota. Myrtle moved to Illinois and Wisconsin in response to William being drafted into the Navy during World War II and his subsequent deployment to the Atlantic Ocean. During her husband’s absence, in service to the nation, Myrtle worked in grocery stores and saved her earnings for their future farming venture in South Dakota. After the war, both Myrtle and William returned to Lake County and began farming in Orland Township, where they farmed until 1978. They continued to enjoy the serenity of country living on the farm until 1991 when they moved to Madison to be closer to family and medical services.

In retirement, Betty enjoyed such things as gardening, playing cards, and visiting family & friends whenever and wherever the possibility presented itself. Betty was a faithful Christian woman who placed the value of family and friends very high on her list of priorities. She loved life and watching things grow, whether in her garden or in the eyes of young children. Myrtle was a kind woman that had a way of making people laugh when she offered constructive criticism and yet would cry alongside those who weep. Her witticisms were only outpaced by her ability to love.

Myrtle is survived by her son, James Michael (Victoria) Byrne; two grandsons- James (Becky) and Jason (Jamie) and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William Sylvester Byrne; four brothers- Harold, Clarence, Palmer, and Joe; one sister- Ethel Pecks and her parents.
