Lisa Deann was born into this world on June 24, 1974 in Rushville, Nebraska. As a child, Lisa grew up and attended school in Gordon, NE where she enjoyed spending her summers swimming at the pool and staying with her grandparents, Ray and Jackie Sholl. After the family moved to South Dakota, Lisa attended middle school in Yankton and then graduated from Lincoln High School in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Lisa began her studies at SDSU in 1992, but after a year began working for M&P Painting in Sioux Falls where she became an exceptional painter, cabinet and furniture refinisher.

Lisa met the love of her life, Rodney Wells. Lisa and Rodney adored their beautiful and goofy dog, Abbey, and both shared a passion for music and travel. They were married on May 5, 2000. Rodney suffered from a life-long heart condition, and succumbed to a heart attack only five months after the were wed.

With bravery, determination, and an unquenchable thirst for knowledge, Lisa returned to her college career at South Dakota State University (SDSU) in 2001. After completing her Bachelors degree in English, Lisa immediately began working towards a Masters in English, while minoring in Native American Studies and Womens Studies. During her time at SDSU, Lisa served as a graduate teaching assistant, adjunct English instructor, and tutor at the universities American Indian Education and Cultural Center. Lisa's exceptional intelligence and hard work earned her numerous awards and scholarships, including Outstanding Senior Student in English and Graduate Assistant of the Year. She graduated summa cum laude, and worked as a Grant Proposal Specialist for the College of Engineering at SDSU.

In 2017, Lisa moved to Omaha, Nebraska to explore new opportunities and be near her sisters and brother-in-law. While living there, she was able to indulge in her love of art, music, food, and nature. Lisa held a deep connection and respect for the Earth and wildlife, and always remained outspoken against social injustices. Her compassion and ability to love unconditionally will live on through all of her family and friends. May she dance among the stars, and be welcomed home by relatives whom she so intensely missed.

Lisa is survived by her mother and step-father, Marcie & Kelly Johnson of Madison, SD; father, Anthony Matula of Rushville, NE; sisters, Kylie (Justin) Reiners of Omaha, NE & Jordan Matula of Bellevue, NE; brother, Joshua Matula of Sioux Falls SD; grandfather, Raymond Sholl of Valentine, NE; and two very special nephews, Oliver & Ervine Matula of Crooks, SD; as well as a host of uncles, aunts, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Rodney Wells; grandmother Jackie Sholl; grandfather, Richard Colhoff; and grandparents, Dick & Joan Matula, and for that we are comforted in the Creator's love and peace.

Lisa is now reunited with the love of her life Rodney and her beloved Grandma Jackie and for that we are comforted in the Creator’s love and peace.
