Obituary for James "Jim" Birgen

James “Jim” Birgen, age 69, of Madison, was taken from us in a car accident on December 17, 2018.  

Memorial mass will be 10:30 AM on Friday, December 21st at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church with Father DeWayne Kayser as the Celebrant.  Visitation will be 4:30-7 PM on Thursday at Weiland Funeral Chapel with a prayer service at 5 PM.  There will be a Masonic Service at 7 PM followed by a Knights of Columbus Rosary.  Visitation will continue on Friday from 9:30-10:15 AM at Weiland Funeral Chapel followed by procession to the church for mass.  Inurnment will be in St. Thomas Cemetery with military honors provided by the Madison VFW & Madison American Legion.

James John Birgen was born in Madison, SD on December 28, 1948 to Joseph and Mary Ann (Kribell) Birgen. Jim grew up in the Winfred area and attended school in Winfred and Junius. In 1967, he graduated from Madison High School. Jim was a weapons mechanic in the Air Force from 1967 to 1971 and served in Vietnam. He married Donna (Biegger) on December 17, 1971 in Madison, SD. Jim graduated from Lake Area Technical College in 1972. After marriage, Jim and Donna lived in Watertown, SD, Madison, SD, Sioux Falls, SD and Tea, SD.

Jim worked for Newcomb Motors, Sioux Alignment and Marv Hall while he lived in Madison, before moving to Gillette, WY in 1977.  While he was in Gillette, he worked for Buck Motors, Carter Mining Company and Peabody Coal. They lived and raised their 3 children (Joe, Becky, and Jeff) in Gillette for 33 years. In 2011, Jim and Donna moved to Madison SD where they currently reside.  In his spare time, Jim loved to read, often found “putzing around” in the garage and served as a contractor for B & H.  Jim was a proud member of the Masonic Evergreen Lodge 17 and Twin Lakes Shrine Club/El Riad Temple. 

He is survived by his wife, Donna; three children and their spouses, Joe (Nicholin) Birgen of Rapid City, SD, Becky (Charles) Redetzke of Sioux Falls, SD, and Jeff (Leah) Birgen of Loveland, CO; seven grandchildren: Nick (Shelby) Crays of Henry, SD, Alex Crays of Hopkinsville, KY, Thomas Redetzke & Ruth Redetzke both of Sioux Falls, Jasper, Fisher and Penny Birgen all of Loveland, CO; one great-grandson, Joseph Crays; nine siblings: Ann Grad of Garretson, SD, Rita Ray of Thomasville, GA, Donna Reinicke of Madison, SD, Tim Birgen of Madison, SD, Jane Nicolls of Howard, SD, Laura Palmer of Madison, SD, Mike Birgen of Gillette, WY, Dan Birgen of FL, and Bob Birgen of Gillette, WY; numerous nieces and nephews; one uncle, Virgil Birgen of Las Vegas, NV and an aunt, Florence Kribell of Yankton, SD. 

Jim is preceded in death by his parents, Joseph (1968) and Mary Ann (1975).
