Bernard “Bud” Olson, age 86, died at his residence under the care of Madison Hospice on September 20, 2010.
He was born on January 31, 1924 at Nunda, SD to Carl and Martha (Hemre) Olson. He married Deloris Paul at Pipestone, MN on December 1, 1956.
He is survived by his wife - Deloris of Madison. One son - Curtis (Sonja) of Sioux Falls and two daughters - Kathy (Craig) VanHove and Paula (Bruce) Barrick both of Madison. eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Three brothers - Orville of Madison, Arvid of Sioux Falls and Marvin of Chester. One sister - Berna Schaaf of Madison.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister - Ruth Oftedal.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on Thursday, September 23, 2010 at Our Savior Lutheran Church with Rev Warren Uecker officiating. Burial will be in Prairie Queen Cemetery at Nunda with military honors by the American Legion
and VFW.
He grew up in Nunda where he attended grade school. He served in the US Army in Europe during WW II where he was engaged in the “Battle of the Bulge” He was awarded a Purple Heart for wounds received in that engagement. After the service he returned to Madison where he worked for the Lake County Highway Department for over 30 years. They also ran the B&D Cafe for 10 years.
He was a member of the VFW, Nunda and Madison American Legion, D.A.V. and VFW Honor Guard. He was a Lincoln Elementary School Veterans Volunteer. He was awarded an honorary degree from Madison High School in 2001.
The family will be present at 7:00 PM on Wednesday at the Weiland Funeral Chapel which is in charge of the arrangements.
