Elizabeth “Betty” Barela- Slagel died at the Madison Community on December 6, 2008. Elizabeth Carolyn Snow was born on February 13, 1921 at Canova, SD to Frank and Ethel (Ramsdell) Snow. She married Lorenzo Barela at Watertown, SD on August 14, 1943. He preceded her in death in 1997. She married Garold “Bud” Slagel at Madison, SD on July 18, 1998. She is survived by her husband - Bud of Madison. One daughter - Linda (Don) Grayson of Madison. One grandson - Scott (Denise) Grayson. Four great grandchildren. One stepson- Gary (Terri) Slagel of Hot Springs. Two stepdaughters - Kay (Gary) Whiting of Colorado Springs, CO and Diane (Gary) Carter of Kennett, Missouri. Six step grandchildren and seven step great grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by her parents, one brother, one sister and a grand daughter - Leslie. Funeral Services will be held at 1:00 PM on Tuesday, December 9, 2008 at the United Methodist Church in Madison with Rev Marilyn Spurrell officiating. Burial will be in Ramsey Baptist Cemetery at Montrose, SD. She grew up in Canova graduating from Canova High School. She graduated from Methodist School of Nursing and worked as a Registered Nurse at the Madison Community Hospital and for Dr George Witson. She was a member of the United Methodist Church, Weslyn Service Guild, Retired Nurses and several bridge clubs. She was also a member of the Six Singers vocal group. The family will be present at 7:00 pm on Monday at the Weiland Funeral Chapel which is in charge of the arrangements.
