Eugene Hemmer 09-04-2008
Eugene “Gene” Hemmer, age 77, died at St Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, MN on September 4, 2008.
He was born on January 1, 1931 at Egan, SD to Clem and Mary (Carolan) Hemmer. He married Sharon Doblar at Salina, Kansas on August 7, 1982.
He is survived by his wife - Sharon of Lake Madison. Four sons - Matt (Brenda) of Solomon, KA, Phil, Joe (Sarah) and Tom (Maggie) all of Salina, KS and three daughters - Katie (Tom) Platten of Salina, KA, Kelly Rook of Lincoln, NE and Michelle (Wayne) Knight Pipe of Chester, SD. Twenty one grandchildren. One brother - Bob (Karen) Hemmer of Dell Rapids.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 am on Monday, September 8, 2008 at St Peter Catholic Church in Colman, SD with Rev John Helmueller officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
He grew up on a farm near Egan and attended Gail Ridge Elementary School graduating from Egan High School in 1949. He enlisted in the US Marine Corps and served in Korea. After the war he returned to farm in Moody County. He moved to Salina, Ka in 1970 where he started Solomon Corporation which he grew to over 425 employees. He moved to Lake Madison in 1992 and started Geno’s Restaurant at Lake Madison which he sold in 2003.
He was a member of the board of directors at DSU Foundation, Heritage Senior Living, Colman Elevator, Moody County School Reorganization and CEO and Board of Directors of Solomon Corporation. He was also a member of the Salina Elks and VFW.
There will be a scripture service at 7:00 PM on Sunday at the Weiland Funeral Chapel in Madison which is in charge of the arrangements.
